Preschool Curriculum Overview

Preschool activities at St. John's Lutheran School and Preschool are designed to encourage academic, social, emotional, and spiritual growth in a loving, Christian learning environment. A rich variety of hands-on, age-appropriate learning experiences are provided to foster curiosity, exploration, and creativity.

•  Show respect and care for living things.
•  Experiment with changes in matter – mix substances, melt ice.
•  Explore concepts of force and motion –wind, gravity, magnetism.
•  Take care of our environment - recycle, reuse and conserve – turn off lights and water, do not litter.
•  Follow basic safety rules when exploring/investigating.
•  Use scientific tools and technology  – scales, magnifiers, thermometers, camera and computer.

St. John's Preschool students learning about different careers through interactive play.•  Develop self-awareness – discuss likes and dislikes and things that make us unique, show awareness of self at a younger age.
•  Expand awareness of family – describe family members, role-play in dramatic play.
•  Learn about environments and where people live.
•  Recognize similarities/differences in people.
•  Identify community workers – act out their roles in dramatic play.
•  Respect the need for rules at home, in school, and in our community – fairness, sharing, taking turns.
•  Assume responsibility in caring for our environment - watering plants, feeding the fish, helping clean up.

•  Engage in dramatic activities – act out stories, act out roles in dramatic play, act out a puppet play, use pretend play, dramatize characters.
•  Participate in music activities – listen to a variety of music styles and rhythms, play musical instruments, explore the different sounds of instruments.
•  Create art with a variety of tools and techniques – draw and paint.
•  Experiment with various visual arts materials – paint, crayons, pencils, markers, play dough, clay, chalk, scissors, glue.
•  Explore ways to use painting materials – combine colors, use different brushes.

•  Participate in cooperative group play.
•  Practice both gross and fine motor skills.
•  Move with balance, control, strength and coordination.
•  Perform tasks using eye-hand coordination.
•  Follow simple safety rules.
•  Identify and practice healthy living habits – eat healthy foods, get plenty of sleep, exercise every day, wash hands, cover your coughs, visit the doctor and dentist.
